Critical Mass was originally suggested to the artist after she learned about the ‘permanent shadows’ in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombings in World War 2.
People, animals and inanimate objects caught in the blast shielded nearby walls from the intense yet momentary heat wave and, though they were destroyed (and the walls around them damaged), the part of the wall they shielded remained unscathed (if they remained standing) so leaving a permanent ‘negative image’ of what had, at that terrible moment, stood there.
Pat Bullen-
Thus, for this artist, shadows (especially) take on an independent life of their own, they take on mass, so much mass that they eventually exist as a part of this world. So, ‘Critical Mass’ applies to this feature of her shadows, and also, of course, to the quantity of Uranium used in the two devastating bombs.
This large and absolutely stunning piece of work would be particularly suited to a business foyer or office perhaps.
