*** MudPuddle Martyrs ***

This is a stop-motion type film, and the longest in the Pat Bullen-Whatling catalogue (at about 9 minutes 21 secs). It features the beginnings of evolution, the arrival of ‘clay humans’, the discovery of religion and war and the eventual destruction of their MudPuddle world . . . all started and ended by the boot of a real human. Talk about Carbon Footprints!

Child Warning!

Some of the images in this Art Film are shocking (not sexual) though very briefly shown. It is moral and, as far as we are aware, true. And that should count for something.

*** The Concept of the film ***

‘MudPuddle Martyrs’ is a stop-motion type film, a bit like Wallace and Gromit, or perhaps a bit more like Morph from television, except that it’s not really like either of them.

Though the film is constructed in a manner to encourage you to really think it is also designed to make you smile and watch it again . . . and again . . . and again. And children? Well, some of the images are shocking, though very briefly shown. And it is moral and, as far as we are aware, true. And that should count for something.

Anyway, the film deals with the, very grown-up, subjects of the creation of religion, the discovery of war that comes from religious dispute, of humility and arrogance.

Although it’s religious imagery is ‘mostly’ Christian they are used simply as a familiar and easy to understand shorthand. It should not be seen as an attack on that particular religion as images are used both to portray what religion (and religions) might have been, but also how they are, only too often, hijacked into real weapons of mass destruction.

It shows very brief images of some of the darkest extremes of religious ardour - each image is just a brief but visible flash. But it is also a charming, funny, warm, exciting story compressed into a few brief minutes.

And hey, perhaps there is a heaven for Plasticine figures?

So that’s okay then!

Watch to the end though - it will make you smile!
