*** Micro to Macro ***

Showing how an artist's inspiration develops from seeing something interesting to photographing it to producing a finished work, this film blends the transition from the actual photographs of the tiniest lichens and patterns on bark - and from the biggest - star systems, spiral galaxies - each to its finished work, and all portrayed in a 'virtual' gallery setting.

See below for details of other art films from Pat Bullen-Whatling that are free to see and for details of the films themselves - and of course you can see similar, full sized, finished works on this site by hovering over the ‘ARTWORK’ button (at the top of every page) and then clicking on ‘PAINTING - MACROSCOPIC LANDSCAPE’.

*** The Concept of the film ***

It’s very simple, I wanted to make a film that begins with the photographic image that I captured from a tree’s bark, a patch of lichen on a gravestone or rock or tree or from the random pattern of leaf and twig litter on a woodland floor.

The film begins with a simple line-drawing of an art gallery exhibition room. The overhead electric light is turned on (and, being fluorescent tubes, it flashes) and then the projector is turned on.

After a lead in of a few static slides the viewer (that’s you) walks closer until the screen fills your vision. Now, as if thinking with the mind of an artist, you see the original photographs more closely and watch as your imagination turns each one into a finished work.

This film uses the technique of ‘morphing’, digitally changing one picture (the original photo) into the work the artist actually was inspired to make from it.

As a contrast to the ‘small things’ that so often fascinate Pat Bullen-Whatling she also incorporated two huge things, spiral galaxies, that succumb to the same process.

In her actual works displayed elsewhere on this website you can see several pieces that have gone far beyond the test pieces featured in the film.
