Original artist: John Constable
Born 1776 -
Title: The Haywain
Original painted: 1821
Original in The National Gallery. London.
This work was lovingly copied by the artist Pat Bullen-
Although this painting is such a familiar one it still retains it power when looked at properly, with towering skies and wonderful attention to detail.
The cottage on the left of the painting still exists (almost unchanged) and was lived in by a Willy Lott at the time, a tenant farmer.
Today this painting is considered to be one of the greatest of all British paintings but when Constable first exhibited it it failed to sell, yet in 1824 it won a gold medal in the Paris Salon exhibition for that year and went on to influence a new generation of French painters including Delacroix.
